review: This was a great show. They played in the War Memorial Auditorium (where the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra normally plays) so the acoustics were great. The band wasn't big enough yet to play the main Coliseum I guess. The encore numbers of 'Riders In The Sky' and 'Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)' still stick out in my mind as highlights of the show - Tom Ivey

encore 2: We Walk - Behind Closed Doors / Femme Fatale / The Lion Sleeps Tonight / Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars) - Ska
notes: After California Dreamin' and urging the crowd to register to vote, Michael begins to sing 'Chicken Train', but is quickly cut off by the rest of the band who launch into a (very lyrically challenged) version of Smokin' In The Boys' Room. After that Peter introduces Burning Hell by saying 'here's another one we don't know'. We Walk is sung by Michael entirely in a fake German accent, with Mike and Bill singing 'ein zwei drei' as backing vocals.

encore 2 included: Moon River
notes: Stipe was in political mode for this show, telling the crowd that Reagan has to go (which was met with laughter as well as booing), and during 'Talk About The Passion' he changed the lyric to 'talk about compassion'. The crowd was very rowdy, as it seems that as the band became more well-known, people who knew little of their music now started showing up and wanted to see whatever they perceived "new wave" to be. Michael kept shushing them during quieter moments, and finally had enough. He picked up the mic stand and walked to the curtains in the back and started singing "Moon River". Some people got it, others were stunned into silence, but after that, people behaved.

encore included: Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)
notes: Venue was originally listed as 'Numbers', but the original had closed down and 'Numbers 2' opened in its place. Michael Stipe was wearing a sport coat over and a colored T-shirt. Mike Mills mentioned at some point that when they came to play Houston in support of Murmur the previous year, they arrived in Houston to find the club they were scheduled to play that night closed and was out of business.
Before 'Pretty Persuasion', Stipe mentioned how drunk he was after they finished this song. During the song he had some kind of sticker or badge of some sort - and he tried to stick it on his sleeve while he was singing "put that on your sleeve" (he was unsuccessful because the sticker had lost its stick - not because he was too drunk)
The second encore was with Peter Holsapple of The dB's. They played a couple songs, ending with 'Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)'. There was someone in the back of the room who kept yelling 'Box Cars' every once in a while throughout the entire show, but he was the only person who yelled out a request at all. It seemed that Mike Mills talked the rest of the band into playing 'Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)' for the last song (obviously in deference to the guy in the back of the crowd), and it was obvious that Peter Holsapple was watching Peter Buck to see the chords played.

21 September 1984 - War Memorial Auditorum, Nashville, TN
support: The dB's
set included: Moon River / We Walk / Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)
notes: The venue had ramps that led up from the audience to the stage, and the crowd kept edging up it until 10-50 people were on stage with the band, and at one point a security guard was getting too rough with a girl in the crowd (the hassle had been going on between the crowd and security for a while) and the guitar drops out of the mix as Peter dashes over to the other side of the stage to push the security man away. Then the crowd roared it's approval. Then, as more and more fans were emboldened to take the stage, two small kids were in danger of getting squashed, and Mike pulled them out and up onto their side of the microphones, (all this during 'We Walk') and got them to sing "up, up, up, up" in the fade out. Then someone got them some posters, and asked what they wanted to hear, and the band responded with a final encore of 'Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)'.

encore 2: Moral Kiosk / Talk About The Passion / Sitting Still / Pretty Persuasion
notes: 'Moon River' is done twice. At the end of the first time (with one word left in the song) someone screams out "Fuck you!" to which Stipe yells back "If you don't like it, you can leave!". He and Mike immediately start over from the beginning. The same guy yells the same remark at the start of the second encore which Stipe replies curtly, "Fuck you, too!". There is another story that the fan was actually shouting, 'Fuck, YEAH!' in appreciation. Apparently the fan actually wrote a letter to the editor of one of the local papers hoping to clarify the incident. Peter Buck joins The dB's on guitar on 'Black And White' as part of their opening set.

notes: Peter Holsapple guests on 'Sloop John B'. Mike Mills & Bill Berry join The dB's on 'Suspicious Minds' during their opening set. From Fred LeBlanc - "I was at this show. I remember being excited with the inclusion of new songs 'Kohoutek' and 'Old Man Kensey' and seeing the acapella version of 'Moon River'. It was my first time seeing the band live and while I enjoyed it, their performance seemed pretty hit-and-miss to me. One song would be great, the next would be ragged and sloppy, and not in a good way. They seemed like they'd been on the road a while. Still, I had a great time.
During an uncomfortable but ultimately hilarious moment onstage, Peter and Mike got into a screaming match with Mike yelling "fuck you" repeatedly at Peter. Onstage. In front of the entire audience.
Anyway, at that moment, Peter walked up to Stipe's microphone and said, "excuse me, ladies and gentlemen but Mike Mills has been abusing me onstage. Can we please get everyone to give a big loud boo to Mike Mills, boooo..." to which the crowd of nearly 2000 obliges and starts booing Mills. You could see Mike seething.
Peter backed away from Stipe's mic and as Mills walked up to his own mic about to angrily respond to Peter's comment, Peter starts the beginning notes of 'Pretty Persuasion' sending Mills into a fury while the audience cheered, completely oblivious to the meltdown onstage. Right then, Stipe grabs an out of tune harmonica and blows the worst note you've ever heard into the mic, screams "fuck it!" throwing the harmonica behind him and starts singing the song.
Pretty wild. I remember Bill looking frighteningly haggard that night, like he'd been out the previous night for the whole night and barely being able to hang on. He sang the prettiest harmonies to 'Gardening At Night' while looking like death warmed over with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth.
New Orleans will do that to you, if you let her.
