notes: Opening for U2 in front of 50,000 people. From the book Remarks - The Story of R.E.M. by Tony Fletcher (pg.82), "The 50,000-strong crowd was in no mood for a band opening a set with as downbeat a song as 'Feeling Gravitys Pull', and the group spent the entire set dodging missiles, the most common of which were plastic bottles full of urine".

encore 1: Boy (Go) / Second Guessing / (Don't Go Back To) Rockville / 1,000,000
encore 2: The Medicine Show / Theme From Two Steps Onward / Windout
notes: Just before 'Rave On', Auctioneer was aborted as Bill leaves the kit (you can hear the sticks go down) to go use the bathroom. There were a lot of requests for 'Moon River', Stipe sang about half a note then said he didn't want to do it, he also tried another song, sang a few words, stopped and said "Nah thats too easy". The intro to 'Windout' was the usual intro they used on the 1985 shows, "Amen brother ben shot the rooster killed the hen".
There is some confusion about a song called 'Guns For Punishment' at the start of encore 2, apparently it is Mike Mills saying 'you're gluttons for punishment' after numerous requests were shouted out, before they played 'The Medicine Show'.

encore 3: Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)
notes: Widely regarded as one of the most legendary and unique R.E.M. shows of all time. After what had been a fairly standard main set (the cover of Bo Diddley's Pills notwithstanding), after heckling during Moon River, R.E.M. decide they'll play mostly cover songs for the rest of the night (despite one poor guy's constant yelling for South Central Rain as heard on the recording available). This is how it went:
Stipe is in the middle of singing Moon River...
audience member: "fuck off!"
Mills: "You come up here and fuck off..."
Stipe: "I can see you..."
Mills: "Come on! Come on! Come up here and say it"
(audience cheers and claps)
Stipe: "Are you blushing yet? You feeling stupid?"
Mills: "Easy for you from down there isn't it, come on up here and say it"

Michael then restarts the song, and the band then go on to perform the aptly titled 'I Can't Control Myself'. Then after a rough and ready 1,000,000 Peter chimes in...
Buck: "The guy who yelled 'fuck you' during Moon River meet me backstage you asshole"
Prior to Smokin' In The Boys' Room...
Stipe: "Where I went to high school there were a lot of kids they listened to this music called heavy metal and they were bad. And right about the time I was a sophmore in high school those boys turned me onto a song Suzy Masters heard on the AM radio and it was by a bunch of men that went by the collective name of BTO [audience cheers] Hold your horses... we thought BTO were pretty hot shit but that was before Lynyrd Skynyrd came along [more cheers] Anyway, we're going to do a medley of those 2 wonderful bands... [Stipe mentions someones name] you might just want to leave the building right about now, you're not gonna like this one bit!"
After a sloppy version of Sweet Home Alabama in which Peter joins in singing and Stipe sings that he can't remember the 2nd verse, things get tense between the band...
Stipe: "Guitar players can't sing for shit!"
Buck: "Singers can't play guitar for shit either"

For the only known time, Ska precedes Carnival Of Sorts rather than the other way around, which closed out the third encore of what was an exhaustive encore of seldom played cover songs, many of which hadn't been played since their very early days, or at all before. And unfortunately for that guy, he never did get South Central Rain!

'During the encore, when Jason from Jason And The Scorchers was on stage, Michael Stipe went back to Bill Berry's drum set, picked up a beer bottle (looked like a Michelob) and poured the contents on Berry's head. Berry stood up, reached over the drum kit and grabbed Stipe by the collar or throat while Stipe grabbed Berry. Jason had to pull them apart. I remember he said in his twangy accent, "Come on boys! Settle down now."
Then after the concert, when most of the crowd had left, Berry ran back out on stage, grabbed a microphone and yelled "Fuck Michael!". Stipe came running out of the wings and tackled Berry and they rolled around on the floor of the stage for a minute while a couple of roadies tried to pull them apart. Order was soon restored. It was very surreal to say the least.'
